Expert backs economic growth initiative

The former chief executive of Manchester City Council, Sir Howard Bernstein, has backed a new private sector-led steering group established to drive forward economic growth in Cheshire and Warrington.

Sir Howard Bernstein advised that it’s crucial for the new Cheshire and Warrington steering group to foster a business-led partnership, where both civic and political leaders can play a role in shaping the region’s future.

The man credited with spearheading the evolution of modern-day Manchester, Sir Howard offered his expertise to guests during the group’s first official breakfast event since its inception earlier this year. He also gave his insight on how the region can leverage its unique investment potential at MIPIM 2019 – the flagship festival of the international and property investment sector.

Sir Howard said: “It’s essential that Cheshire and Warrington is clear in its objectives for the region, to ensure that this is an effective partnership where both civic and political leaders have a voice and have the opportunity to play an active role.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for collaboration between the public and private sector, and leveraging the powerful potential of strong and experienced business leaders to ensure the long-term success of the partnership. Cheshire and Warrington must continue to work hard to ensure those benefits are maximised to the advantage of people who live and work not only in the North West but across the North of England.”

The group was launched by the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which is responsible for determining local economic priorities and undertaking activities to drive economic growth and the creation of local jobs, to help promote the region as a great place to invest.

The LEP is seeking to bring more businesses together to discuss how they can work together to promote the region’s economy and achieve the objective of growing it to £50bn per year by 2040.

Victoria Merton, chair of the Cheshire and Warrington steering group and director of corporate affairs at The Peel Group, said: “The Cheshire and Warrington partnership is focussed on the strategic and economic goals of the region and ensuring that we’re positioning the region on a global scale.

“This event marked the beginning of the Cheshire and Warrington partnership offer. It was a privilege to welcome Sir Howard Bernstein to offer his expertise and the benefit of his insight on how we can drive forward our ambitions for the future of Cheshire and Warrington and to understand what benefits MIPM can offer to businesses in the region.”
