Shredding company has ambitious plans

A Cheshire company which specialises in confidential document shredding and secure storage, is de-classifying some exciting information of its own.

Topwood Limited, based near Malpas, has bought a three acre site on Wrexham industrial Estate, to support its ongoing growth plans.

The former food production and distribution facility will be renovated for the secure storage with a capacity of over 250,000 archive boxes.

Tom Gilruth, director of Topwood, said: “This purchase reflects the growth we have seen over the last four years. It’s an exciting time for Topwood. The new site will play an important part in our expansion plans.”

Chester law firm DTM Legal, led by Paul Makinson, acted for the owners of Topwood.

Paul Makinson said: “The new site will accommodate Topwood’s growing secure shredding and recycling business and it is great news that a local company, based in Cheshire, is now expanding into North Wales.  Everyone at DTM wishes Topwood all the very best and we look forward to assisting them on future transactions.”

DTM Legal worked closely with the company’s accountant and its bank, Lloyds Bank Plc, on the deal.

Topwood says it has seen an increase in demand for confidential shredding caused by the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that came into force in May as part of the new Data Protection Act 2018.

Organisations have recognised that confidential shredding is a key component when staying compliant with GDPR, particularly high security shredding, the Topwood team says.

The company has reported a steady increase in demand for mobile on-site shredding services, particularly in the West Midlands and Birmingham. In order to respond to the increase in demand, Topwood has added a new shred truck to its fleet of high security mobile on-site shred trucks.

The company says: “Data security has never been more important. Under data protection laws organisations must take all the technical and organisational measures to comply with data protection laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

“Off-site shredding is a secure process when done professionally but many organisations do not have time or the resources to audit the shredding company’s facility for shredding. However, on-site destruction, where documents and data are destroyed before they leave the customers’ workplace offers the shortest ‘chain of custody’ and so by definition is the safest.”
