Paul Chadwick

Paul Chadwick is the director of Paul Chadwick Creative which is a collective of creative services; photography, video, motion graphics and design that work independently and collaboratively to create a vibrant and exciting visual marketing package. The company has been trading since 2014.

EXPLAIN A TYPICAL WEEK IN YOUR WORKING LIFE: Each day is different. Last week I was in Kent photographing hotels at the beginning of the week; midweek I was editing a health and safety video for a manufacturing client and by the end of the week I was creating an animation.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING YOUR INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW? With ever-moving trends and technical updates it is very much a challenge to keep up with products and trends. It is vital to stay in tune with the changes to the industry and keep ahead of competition.

AND WHAT ARE THE BIG OPPORTUNITIES? There are huge opportunities to be had in this industry. I am lucky that I get to use my creativity on a daily basis. Having excellent relationships with clients is key as it creates trust; which means they give you the go-ahead to be as creative as you like on projects.

HOW DO YOU GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR STAFF? Communicate. Communicate. Communicate.

WHAT WAS YOUR LAST MEETING ABOUT, HOW LONG DID IT LAST, AND WAS IT PRODUCTIVE? My last meeting was about style and brand guidelines for hotel photography.  The hotel brand had recently updated the decor in many of its hotels and we discussed ways to keep the photography standards consistent in all hotels. This meeting ensured that we were up to date with style and allows us to keep our photography fresh, vibrant and consistent.

HOW MANY EMAILS DO YOU GET IN A DAY, AND HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE TO READ THEM? When on location, it can be difficult to keep up with emails but I ensure I reply to emails as soon as possible. When editing in the office, it is much easier to reply to emails or pick up the phone. Again, communication is key to creating relationships and I would hate to keep clients waiting.

DO YOU ANSWER WORK CALLS OR EMAILS AT HOME? WHAT’S THE RIGHT WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Is that possible when owning your own company? Of course I try to balance work and home life but when you put your heart and soul into developing a small business, your phone or laptop is never far from reach and your mind never switches off. However, I am a great believer in spending time with those people that you love, as they are the ones who support you when things get tough and cerebrate your every achievement.

HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR COLLEAGUES WOULD DESCRIBE YOU? I’d like to think that they would describe me as passionate, honest and driven.

BREXIT – WHAT’S YOUR VIEW OF WHAT IT’S ALL GOING TO MEAN? I acknowledge the pressures and gains that Brexit can bring but decisions have been made, and if controls are meaningful, well thought out and pragmatic then people want to use them sensibly. Let’s leave it there.

HIGHLIGHTS OR LOWLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Some of the highlights of my jobs include photographing The Prince of Wales and Arnold Schwarzenegger, seeing my work on prime time TV adverts and being a preferred supplier for top end hotel chains. It would be naive of me to say that every day is a highlight but anybody who owns their own business would agree that there are plenty of anxieties that come with the job!

PET HATES? 50 mph zones on the motorway.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF SOME WISE ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Not to spend so many hours and days worrying about the smallest things. Everything always works out in the end!

HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM WORK? I love to cook and I love to play the guitar.  But not together, it can get messy.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS SPECIAL ABOUT CHESHIRE, AND ITS BUSINESS COMMUNITY? It is a fantastic place to live, it’s a great place to eat, you can get to all the major cities with ease, the majority of people are lovely and industries are booming. There is such a fantastic business community in Warrington, where I am based, and I feel lucky that I now get to call some of my clients friends.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY WOULDN’T KNOW: I am a heavy metal fan, I own a skateboard and have shoulder length hair on my passport photo!

YOU CAN TAKE ONE BOOK, ONE FILM AND ONE CD ONTO A DESERT ISLAND – WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Book - The Secret by Rhonda Byrne; film - Jurassic Park One; CD - Master of Reality by Black Sabbath

YOUR FIVE DREAM DINNER PARTY GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE? Dave Grohl, Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King, and David Attenborough

WHAT WOULD YOU COOK FOR THEM…? We would begin with Thai dumplings and spring rolls, followed by prawn tom kha soup and we would finish with a simple fresh fruit salad.
