Jamie Boyd

Jamie Boyd is the founder and managing director of Today Team Limited which operates a business to business collection and delivery courier service from small vans through to HGV shipments. The business has been running for 13 years.

EXPLAIN A TYPICAL WEEK IN YOUR WORKING LIFE: Very varied between sales, operations, management and strategy -  two days are never the same.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING YOUR INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW? Lack of HGV drivers and the traffic of course.

AND WHAT ARE THE BIG OPPORTUNITIES? As a race we’re getting more impatient – that can only help the same day delivery area of our business.

HOW DO YOU GET THE BEST OUT OF YOUR STAFF? We employ an external HR director and a performance psychologist that both work directly with the team. Both initiatives have been a great success - so much so we’ve been shortlisted for a national CIPD award.

WHAT WAS YOUR LAST MEETING ABOUT, HOW LONG DID IT LAST, AND WAS IT PRODUCTIVE? Credit control, always an interesting subject, roughly 30 minutes and yes it was productive.

HOW MANY EMAILS DO YOU GET IN A DAY, AND HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE TO READ THEM? 30-50 a day and I do my best to operate a zero inbox - reply, delete or folder as much as possible as quickly as possible.

DO YOU ANSWER WORK CALLS OR EMAILS AT HOME? WHAT’S THE RIGHT WORK-LIFE BALANCE? Yes, always have done, not sure work-life balance is actually a thing, I love running the business so ‘work’ isn’t a chore to me.

HOW DO YOU HOPE YOUR COLLEAGUES WOULD DESCRIBE YOU? Driven, positive and honest.

BREXIT – WHAT’S YOUR VIEW OF WHAT IT’S ALL GOING TO MEAN? Who knows? I’m concentrating on what we’re doing. You can only control the controllables as an old rugby coach once told me.

HIGHLIGHTS OR LOWLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR? I’m proud of the journey the business has been on from start up in 2005 to where we are now.

PET HATES? A classic one – people cooking fish in the office microwave.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF SOME WISE ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? To take the learning from the things that don’t work out - something I remind myself of now, but would have helped a lot in the early days.

HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM WORK? I like hitting the gym before work and I also love eating out and trying new restaurants.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS SPECIAL ABOUT CHESHIRE, AND ITS BUSINESS COMMUNITY? It’s right in the middle of two major developing cities and I’d say generally everyone is friendly and supportive.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE PROBABLY WOULDN’T KNOW: In 2007 I auditioned for Dragons' Den. I was asked to go on the show and then turned them down.

YOU CAN TAKE ONE BOOK, ONE FILM AND ONE CD ONTO A DESERT ISLAND – WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Book – A World War 2 one, an era that really interests me;  film – Batman - The Dark Knight – Heath Ledger's performance is unreal; CD – couldn’t pick one artist, I’d make one with all my favourite tracks.

YOUR FIVE DREAM DINNER PARTY GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE? Winston Churchill, Shawn Carter (aka Jay Z), Steve Coogan,Scarlett Johansson, Mick Jagger.

WHAT WOULD YOU COOK FOR THEM…? I wouldn’t be cooking (they wouldn’t be impressed!). The caterers would be cooking – duck salad to start, ribeye steak with all the trimmings for main and some cheesecake for dessert, along with lots of Malbec of course. I’d also make sure the was a good cigar or three for Winston.
